(FOX Providence) - Since its start in 1989 The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K has hosted thousands of runners. And while many come and go over the years, there's one group that has been participating from the very beginning.

Runners have trained for months to prepare The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K , and the staff at one local accounting team said, it's much more than a race.

"It's a time to enjoy the run, and just enjoy the whole ambiance, the music, the crowd, the food afterwards, the spirit of getting together, the energy of the race and so forth, and we're not expecting to win it," said Richard Sullian, Partner at Piccerelli, Gilstein & Company, LLP.

And running with a group certainly has its benefits.

"It's a good time and it's a lot easier to run with a lot of people. And there's some people that get a little competitive, but, it's fun and it's easier to train," added Sullivan.

They train in and around Providence. Many run together during lunch time, about two to three times a week, logging three to six miles a day.

For Richard Sullivan, running has become a tradition. Racing in ever downtown 5K since its start, he has seen the group progress and change over time.

"Over 22 years now, we've had some children who originally raced, now my daughter pushes her baby in a baby carriage in the race, and she has come to probably about all of them. But, over that period of time you see a lot of change. Young kids who just started out with us and now young adults."

The staff has shown their teamwork and comradery over the years by making t-shirts to wear on race day.

The whole office takes pride in being part of the thousands who join the fun of the annual downtown 5K, whether they're running, walking or just to cheer others on.

And if anyone wants to run, walk or cheer at The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K Sunday, September 18, it starts at 11:15 a.m.

And join Eyewitness News Monday night for The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K Wrap. It airs at 7 p.m. on WPRI-12 .
