NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WPRI/AP) - Police in Connecticut say they found what they believe is the body of a Yale University graduate student hidden inside the wall of a building where she was last seen five days ago.
New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard says the body has not been positively identified as doctoral student Annie Le.
"We are assuming it is her, so we are treating it as a homicide investigation," Chief Reichard said.
Police said they found the body in a part of the building that houses utility cables running between floors.
Le has been the focus of a massive police search since she vanished in the building on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old swiped her identification card to enter the university building that morning, but there was no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex. Investigators pored over blueprints and surveillance video footage while searching for her. Investigators also searched through the lab's trash at an incinerator in Hartford.
Chief Reichard said police had recovered "a large amount" of physical evidence, but he would not discuss what that included.
Le was from Placerville, California. She was set to get married to Columbia University graduate student Jonathan Widawsky on Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore.
Police on Sunday would not say if they have any suspects. They previously have said Widawsky is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.
