SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) - Friday morning's close call behind the wheel for one of the world's most famous athletes -- Tiger Woods, whose name has become synonymous with the world of golf -- has already created a stir among sports fans and non-fans alike.

So many golfers now credit Tiger Woods as one of the big reasons they picked up the sport -- his injuries in a car crash were the hot topic in in the golf department at Dick's Sporting Goods in Seekonk Friday.

"He's crossed a lot of barriers. When I grew up, there was no Blacks or Chinese playing golf," said Benny Fong. He credits Tiger Woods with driving his interest in the sport.

"I think he has raised an entire new generation of young players, who take up a sport they would not be usually exposed to."

Since Woods appeared on the scene, the popularity of the game has soared, with more people teeing up for the first time, and those watching the sport on tv.

"I don't think I watched as much golf as I do now," said Chad Kritzas. "If Tiger is playing, everyone is glued to the TV on a Sunday afternoon."

Golfing enthusiasts have yet to find out if the accident will have an impact on Tiger's game -- with one man citing the pro's recent knee injuries and surgery.

Tiger was in this area last in September, when played in the Deutsche Bank championship in Norton, Mass. He finished in ninth place.
