BOSTON, Mass (WPRI) - There is a new documentary featuring former Boston Red Sox pitcher and legend Luis 'El Tiante' Tiant. The Lost Son of Havana is a 102 minute film that follows Tiant on his 2007 return to Cuba.
Tiant was playing baseball in the U.S. in 1961 when the Bay of Pigs Invasion took place. Dictator Fidel Castro ordered Tiant to return to the country immediately, where he could play as an amateur, or he would be banned from returning for life. Tiant decided to stay in the United States, beginning 46 years of exile.
Tiant became one of the most dominate pitchers in Major League Baseball during the 1970s, and remains a fan favorite for Red Sox fans until this day.
The Lost Son of Havana features Luis Tiant, Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastrzemski and Peter Gammons. It is produced by Bobby and Peter Farrelly and directed by Jonathan Hock.
